Best practices for 40G+ cabling in dense racks?
We're upgrading our DC to 40G connectivity and consolidating from 4-post to high-density 42U racks. Currently dealing with a mess of Cat6A patch cables and want to avoid the same spaghetti.
Key concerns:
- Cable management: Clips, trays, or vertical management systems? Budget per rack?
- Heat management: Does aggressive bundling impact airflow? We're running hot in summer.
- Future-proofing: Should we pre-run conduit for 100G upgrades in 2-3 years?
- Labeling: Recommendations for fiber labeling systems that survive heat cycles?
We've got 8 racks to retrofit. Any war stories or vendor recommendations appreciated—Hetzner seems to have solid density practices if anyone's toured their facilities.

Go with vertical cable managers and keep your bundles loose—seriously, tight bundling tanks airflow. I'd budget ~$400-600/rack for decent trays. For labeling, thermal printer + adhesive labels beats anything else, tag both ends. On future-proofing: pre-run 2" conduit now if you can, way cheaper than retrofitting later. 40G DAC cables are your friend for short runs (saves heat too). Biggest mistake I see is people overcomplicating it—just separate power, data, and mgmt runs vertically and you're golden.

For 40G at scale, consider DAC (direct attach copper) cables over patch cables where possible—way less heat, cheaper, and cleaner runs. On the conduit question: absolutely pre-run it now. Pulling 100G fiber later through a packed rack is a nightmare. We use 1.5" PVC split-loom for future runs, costs maybe $50/rack and saves hours of rework. Also: don't cheap out on patch panel routing—invest in a quality 40G panel with proper strain relief or you'll debug phantom link failures for months.

One thing nobody mentions: invest in a proper cable tray labeling system from day one—not just labels on cables.
